This is the GeezerCast where I am hoping to forever depart from the “howcum the polls are so out of step with the government” ploy that I’ve been using. Darn nifty election, you bet. I also recount a few farm implement adventures, which also turned out just fine.
Usually I read you the polls and scratch my head. This time I read the polls and express hope that maybe we can do something to change the policy direction in Washington.
Ze Frank has all us Sports Racers (check out The Show to find out more, or if you’re really into it check out his whole site — well worth the journey) mashing up a cool vocal track by a mystery guy named Ray. There are some interesting issues that have arisen now that it’s looking like Ray is an inner-city black preacher in St Louis who has trouble with Jewish people. I play the tracks I made up, and explore those issues, in this podcast.
This is a longer-than-normal GeezerCast ’cause I’m trying to encapsulate why I’m not keen on municipal WiFi projects and I couldn’t quite fit it into the normal 10 minute slot.
One of the things that has me bugged is that these projects don’t look like they’ll ever make money. I went so far as to post a financial model out there on the ‘net. Let’s do a little open-source financial modeling here and get these numbers out into the light of day instead of in the heads of the Voodoo consultants who are making lots of money walking cities down the primrose path.
If you don’t like my (wildly unprofitable) model, fix it! I’d love to be proven wrong — but right now it looks to me like we’re not solving the digital divide, we’re distracting ourselves from the real issue of open-access networks, and we’re putting cities on the hook for some very expensive project failures down the line.
Summer’s winding down and the Geezercast quotient is rising as farm activity starts to move indoors. A few things in the NY Times caught my eye — a story about pedophiles that paints a perfect road-map for people are looking for support in that activity (I’m wondering whether the author really realized what he was doing) and another piece about how song-writers with Democratic political points of view are being shut out of country music (with implications that make me grumpy).
Not to mention the story of getting a dang bug caught in my ear. How can you resist all that??
I was going to do another one of my “see, I’m in the majority” rants based on the current polls. But I came across one where I’m in the minority — a majority (admittedly skinny — 51 to 49%) of Americans think it’s OK for the administration to rummage through our Internet traffic and phone calling records in the name of fighting terrorism. I was so struck by that number that I decided to devote a Geezercast to the topic.
Plus, there’s a new version of Jamstix out and I dropped a new theme song into the show as a result.
Another gaggle of poltical issues that I find myself holding the majority opinion on. As usual, I wonder where the heck the Democrats have gone and wandered off to. But it’s nice to know that I’m not crazy anyway…
The last couple weekends have been consumed with editing all the licensed music out of all 40 or so podcasts on Sex and Podcasting. So I’m pretty behind on actually doing new stuff for Geezercast. This week, I decided to play Sean Kershaw’s first podcast, interviewing me, rather than come up with something on my own. Sean is the Executive Director at the Citizen’s League. His first podcast is pretty neat — we were a little manic at the beginning (we’d gotten all the geek stuff working at last), but we settled down to have a good discussion about community preparedness and podcasting and stuff.
A new tune — the first actual multi-part song using the new electronic music toys. Plus, a recap of the week’s politics and polls. Plus a very brief forey into that strange world of extreme high-end audio. Oh my grandchildren, keep your hands on your wallets.
Ah, what a difference a week can make — the elections went well for folks like me who are in the mainstream (yep, I quote the polls to prove it). This show features another Jamstix creation, reviews some MIT research into aluminum-foil mind-control beanies, heads into a reminiscence about my experiences with the folks who believe contrails are evidence of a government plot and wraps up with this week’s poll results on a few key issues.
